Five easy steps that will minimise disruption to both you and your contractor, speed up completion of the work and have you smile all the way to the end result.
Renovations, to what should be your tranquil, relaxing space can often be more disruptive than what you have anticipated. The potential noise levels, disorder, and general presence of a work team in your private space can leave you overwhelmed and agitated. You can, however, take a few steps to ensure that the process flows without disruption and that inconvenience to yourself and your property, is minimised.
By following the 5 easy steps below, you will not only safeguard what is important to you but you will also assist the contractor to complete the work in the safest and shortest time possible, with the least amount of disruption to the workflow and potential damage to the area surrounding the workspace. This can assist in avoiding costly mistakes or accidents involving property, pets, or people.
- Good communication keeps conflict and confusion from your project by ensuring you remain aligned with your contractor and that both parties know exactly what’s expected of them. Whether you are working via a building contractor or with the roofing team directly, ensure that you put time aside at the beginning of your project to meet the team. Acquaint yourself with who will be working on your site and discuss your roofing project with the installer, in detail, on the day or commencement. Make sure they explain the entire process and timeline with you. This critical factor could cost you if the installer does not meet their committed timelines, so stay close to your project and your installer. A reputable installer will be willing to take the time to put your mind at ease!
- Have a scheduled time to walk-about with the contractor. Raise any concerns you may have as soon as possible and as the project progresses. Do not delay concerns until the end of the project. Small concerns along the way can easily be rectified whereas being left too long or late, may result in matters more difficult to resolve.
- Ensure that the contractor is aware of your unique site requirements – whether it is about lunch areas, the use of common property facilities, designated smoking areas, a nearby swimming pool or refuse removal. A reputable contractor will naturally practice on-site common courtesy but should your requirements fall outside of the ‘general courtesy’ realm, be sure to communicate this in a polite and specific manner.
- Remove all valuables in the working area. Most contractors should have insurance cover but mistakes do happen and it often involves items of sentimental value or items that cannot be replaced. Ensure that you point these items out to the contractor or completely remove it from the working area.
- Safeguard your animals and the onsite contractors. A working site is a noisy environment and can be equally disruptive to your pets and the contractors. Ensure that you have a comfortable space for your animals, away from the working area, to safeguard them and also eliminate the area from unnecessary risk for the staff members. Large pieces of roofing material and power tools can be equally dangerous to humans and animals if work is disrupted.
